The 8th midterm Conference of the European Research Network Sociology of the Arts will take place at â€žBabes-Bolyaiâ€ University in Cluj-Napoca from 4 to 6 September 2014, and will be conducted in English. The general theme of the conference is Art and its contexts: cross-disciplinary dialogue.

The Research Network Sociology of the Arts aims to provide the sociological context for understanding the multifaceted and interwoven social aspects which characterize the art worlds. A key aim of this conference is to promote collaboration and scholarly exchange between scholars of the arts, to support the presentation of new research projects and to offer inspiration for the further development of sociology of the arts; in other words sociological approaches to art and their tense but promising relations with other approaches by cultural studies, art history, philosophy and aesthetics.

Therefore, researchers from all social sciences disciplines, philosophy and humanities, as well as PhD students and artists who are interested in inter- and trans-disciplinary dialogue are welcome to participate in this conference and create special sessions. Papers on this theme are invited, with the expectation that they may include a broad nexus of sub-issues around alternative approaches to art and its contexts, the social and the aesthetic, willing to cross the divide between sociology and aesthetics. Proposal deadline will beÂ Febuary 15th, 2014.

The programme will be thematically broad and open for presentations toÂ all core areas of arts sociology.

The Fourth International Conference on Degrowth for Ecological Sustainability and Social Equity

Fom September 2nd to 6th 2014, the 4th International Degrowth Conference will take place in Leipzig, Germany. Its aim is to seek for alternate models of society and economy, beyond a growth paradigm that leads from crisis to crisis.

Many analyses from various scientific disciplines imply that a growth-based economic and social system cannot have a future: Despite a growing number of technological solutions for a â€œGreen Growthâ€, global emissions and the consumption of resources are significantly on the rise. It is now high time to develop economic and social models that are independent of growth, and to uncover viable alternatives to the imminent imperative of growth.

Along with scientific exchange there will be ample space for open and activity-oriented formats, aiming to link different approaches and to convert them into reality.
In more than 50 scientific seminars, workshops, areas of practice and artistic contributions every day, alternatives to the economic growth paradigm and their possible realization will be explored, both theoretically and pratically. The conference will be a place to create new ideas, develop visions, show vital options of community and discuss them openly.

Programme

The conference will consist of an opening night, three complete days and a closing morning session. The opening event will be open for the general public. Along with a final discussion, the closing event will include a festival. The conference unfolds in three steps which offer a common perspective and a general framework respectively to each full day:

The 8th International Conference on Cultural Policy Research (ICCPR)

The 8th International Conference on Cultural Policy Research will take place in Hildesheim, Germany, from September 9th to 12th, and in Berlin, from September 12th to 13th, 2014.

ICCPR2014 aims to provide a space for exploring cultural policies, their meanings, roles and impact in an interdisciplinary and international environment.Â This exploration is not restricted to the contemporary period, or any geographical area. The conference assumes no fixed understanding of the concepts of culture or policy.

In Germany, where the ICCPR2014 takes place, cultural policy is most commonly understood as Gesellschaftspolitik, or â€˜society policyâ€˜. Whilst this will form one of the main themes of the conference, encompassing the broad field of culture and development and especially the relations of cultural policy, the arts and development processes in society, the ICCPR2014 will be welcoming papers from across the whole spectrum of cultural policy studies.

Call for Proposals
Proposals for panels (thematic sessions) and individual papers (paper sessions) on the study of cultural policy and the relationship between culture and politics broadly defined are invited. Proposals in the widest range of disciplines, provided they make an original academic contribution to the conference theme, are welcome and encouraged. Proposals based on research on cultural policy that is primarily â€˜instrumentalâ€™ (such as market research) or on research designed for the purposes of advocating a preconceived institutional position will not be accepted. This does not exclude applied research of high academic quality.

A study afternoon of presentations and discussion on art practice and sustainability with artists Lise Autogena, Fernando Garcia-Dory and TamÃ¡s KaszÃ¡s and led byÂ curators by Maja and Reuben Fowkes.Â This symposium looks at the challenges of living in ecological times and the sense in which the current political, economic and environmental predicament might also offer opportunities for a sustainable transformation of global society. How have artists sought to navigate the dilemmas of living and working in a world system thatÂ seems chronically out of touch with ecological realities and can they, through their practice and approach to the world, act as guides duringÂ times of crisis?

â€˜Navigating Ecological Timesâ€™ is realised through the River School and supported by the EU Culture Programme.Â Maja and Reuben Fowkes are art historians and curators whose interests in the field of art and ecology are manifest in their curated exhibitions, symposia and writings, which have explored key ideas and practices around green curating, environmental art history and the sustainability of contemporary art. Their work also focuses on the theory and aesthetics of East European art from the art production of the socialist era to contemporary artistic responses to the transformations brought by globalisation.

The making of art seems to be haunted by spectres of evaluation, with competing claims and judgments about the limits, uses, and value of art. This international conference will examine critical approaches to evaluation and value in relation to community-engaged arts practice. Through diverse and creative formats and a range of local and international speakers, theseÂ conversations also explore the relationship between established community arts practices and the appearance of new forms of collaboration and engagement across a range of disciplines, from participatory design to social practice.Â This conference is the culmination of a 3 year Australian Research Council-funded Linkage project â€œTowards an Integrated Approach for Evaluating Community-based Artsâ€ with investigators Dr Lachlan MacDowall (University of Melbourne), Dr Martin Mulligan (RMIT University), Frank Panucci (Australia Council for the Arts) and Dr Marnie Badham as Research Fellow (University of Melbourne).

The Spectres of Evaluation conference committee is now inviting abstracts for presentations, workshops and panel presentations connecting themes around critical approaches to evaluation of community-based arts including negative value and potential for harm, network theories, dialogic methods, and new aesthetic language, the use of creative, participatory and democratized methods in cultural measurement, the re-presentational practices such as exhibition, evaluation, critical writing and curating involving community-based art, the value of art as labour and the role of the artist in society, the competing lenses of evaluation: perspectives from political, health, justice, international development, education, or arts sectors, the alternative systems of value in community-based arts: gift exchange and reciprocity, creative commons, feminist economies, peer assessment, crowd funding, and risk assessment and the implications of new technologies, open source hacking, digital research methods and communication, and data visualization on arts evaluation practice.

webband20131 The LUMA Foundation was established in 2004 to support the activities of independent artists as well as institutions working in the fields of art and photography, publishing, documentary, and multimedia. The foundation specializes in challenging artistic projects combing a particular interest in enviroinmental issues, human rights, education, and culture in the broadest sense.Â The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (CCS Bard) is an exhibition, education, and research center dedicated to the study of art and curatorial practices from the 1960s to the present day. The Human Rights Program at Bard College is a transdisciplinary major across the arts, social sciences, and literature and include the Human Rights Project which links theoretical inquiry and critical explorations of human-rights practice with active research and involvement in contemporary issues.

Responding to the drastic changes in how political transformations in the name of justice have been organized and taken place since the first â€œHuman Snapshot Conferenceâ€ in Arles in 2011, the second LUMA Foundation Conference in 2013, â€ The Flood of Rights,â€ will ask how technologies of image-capture and the channels of communication have in recent years transformed the very terms of human rights.Â The conference will discuss the intersections between human rights, photography, and concepts of universalism : â€ how the newly produced and disseminated universalizing pressures on morality, law, civic engagement and their institutions are themselves transfigured in the process.â€Â The key questions are then:?â€What are the technologies, languages, institutions, and interests that structure the global distribution of concepts and practices of humanism and universalism, and how do they leave their mark on these ideas themselves??â€

Splinterfields is an initiative of several Brussels-based organisations (Constant, FoAM, nadine and OKNO) active in the fields of ecological, technological and media arts to foster collaborative, agile and flexible learning. The programme of workshops, study groups and field-tests is open to artists, designers, technologists and other generalists curious to explore tools and mindware for experiments in contemporary culture and daily life.TheÂ workshopÂ is designed as a master class, bringing together practitioners and enthusiasts in the art, science and technology of biochemistry and fermentation to learn from one another and find connections between their respective fields of interest.

FoAMâ€™s Splinterfields workshops explore emergingÂ technological artsÂ through the lens of preindustrial crafts and contemporary sciences. The idea is to learnÂ with bio-hacking, the fundamentals of biochemistry and the craft of fermentation.The workshop will include theoretical discussions aboutÂ biochemical conceptsÂ with hands-on experiments in a wet lab and kitchen.

AquatopiaÂ is a major exhibition of contemporary and historic art and artefacts that explores how the ocean deep has been imagined across cultures and through time to the present day. The exhibition and the accompanying book reveal how human cultures have projected their sexual desires, their will to power, and their fear of difference and death onto the oceanâ€™s invisible depths and the life-forms it sustains. The deep in Aquatopia is a dream-state, akin to the unconscious. At the same time, its mythologies allegorise far-reaching historical processesâ€”globalisation, colonisation, slavery, expropriation, subjugation, patriarchy.

Aquatopiaâ€™s utopic and dystopic depths are inhabited by ancient monsters and sirens, shipwrecks and submersibles, militarised gill-men and dolphin embassies, sperm whales and giant squids, water babies and horny octopi. The deep and its species are represented by major pre-19th-century artists such as JMW Turner, Andrea Mantegna, Odilon Redon, Francis Danby, Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and major figures in 20th-century art such as Marcel Broodthaers, Oskar Kokoschka, Barbara Hepworth, Edward Wadsworth, Hannah Wilke, Ana Mendieta and Lucian Freud. Contemporary artists include Christian Holstad, Mark Dion, Spartacus Chetwynd, Juergen Teller, The Otolith Group, Shimabuku, Mikhail Karikis, Simon Starling, Sean Landers, Mati Diop and Wangechi Mutu. Scrimshaw (sperm whale teeth carved by sailors), antique diving equipment, elaborately carved shells and coral, and the glass models of marine species of Rudolf & Leopold Blaschka are amongst the artefacts also featuring.

The exhibition is curated by Alex Farquharson, Director of Nottingham Contemporary, in dialogue with Martin Clark, Artistic Director, Tate St Ives. It travels to Tate St Ives in October, and is a partnership between landlocked Nottingham Contemporary and oceanic Tate St Ives. It features over 150 loans from a great many museums and private collections, in particular Tate, Victoria & Albert Museum and National Maritime Museum.

Freiburg theatre is taking part in the project by holding a symposium and an experimental game called â€œRegiodromâ€. In front of the museum itself, urban gardeners work together with interested visitors to create green spaces. Moreover, the documentary â€œEarthâ€, directed by Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield, reveals insights into the natural world â€“ providing a starting point and incentive for sustainable activities.

A New Social Action Holocaust Memorial Project

The project is to be situated on the streets of Vienna and along the Danube Canal. Forging a dynamic relationship between different disciplines: art, video, typography, web design, street theater, sound art, history, archival research, and Holocaust education, The Vienna Project is envisioned as a â€œlivingâ€ memorial based on a participatory model of engagement.

Developed through dialogue as a citizen-led initiative, The Vienna Project is a â€œprocess-basedâ€ expression of remembrance. The Vienna Project marks the 75th anniversary year of the Anschluss in 1938, when racial persecution officially began in Austria; it will conclude on V-E Day (Victory in Europe Day). The memorial project unfolds over the course of six months as a dynamic series of performative events, dedicated to stimulating fresh conversations in novel formats regarding the Holocaust and National Socialism.
