Opportunity: Making History Residency 2022

Creative Carbon Scotland, Open Calls

Making History is a maker-in-residence Scotland-wide initiative, funded by Historic Environment Scotland and Craft Scotland, bringing makers in residence to some of Scotland’s finest historical buildings.

Historic Environment Scotland and Craft Scotland are looking for three to four makers to support a community engagement project inspired by four of Historic Environment Scotland‘s properties: Arbroath Abbey, Dunfermline Abbey, Melrose Abbey and Dunblane Cathedral.

Taking inspiration from the physical structure, stories, history and culture of these buildings, the successful applicants will be supported to work with a community or learning group to co-design new work in any one of Craft Scotland’s eligible disciplines, and share their findings, practice and skills with other makers and educators through in-person or online talks.

The project will take place from February to March 2022, with a showcase presented after this time. Makers will need to commit to 15 days work in total, for the development and delivery of the project.

Situated on Canada’s beautiful west coast Salt Spring Island, we work and create on the unceded territories of the Hul’qumi’num and SENĆOŦEN speaking peoples. Here you will find a sanctuary to breathe, dream, experiment, create and play.

Founders William Mackwood and Gwenyth Dobie are both extremely experienced in the development of new work through their company Out of the Box Productions and having been on Faculty at York University’s Theatre and Dance Departments. William and Gwenyth have delved into the worlds of Dance, Theatre, Music, Interactive Stage, Immersive and Site-Specific creation, and we welcome applications from emerging and established artists of all performance based practices.

Artist Residency at Woodland Farm Includes:

  • A PDF on our website outlines all the services and research equipment available to Artists in Residency

  • A private, beautifully appointed 1-bedroom cottage with a full kitchen and BBQ

Program summary: 

The Creative Green Tools are a comprehensive set of carbon calculation and reporting tools, created specifically for the arts and culture sector. The Tools will be launched across Canada in early 2022 and made available to organizations and practitioners in the sector, along with training, user support, educational resources and other opportunities for learning and collaboration. 

Main role responsibilities:

  • Train users to use the Creative Green Tools
  • Provide one-on-one technical support via email, phone or video call
  • Create user guides and other instructional materials for the Creative Green Tools
  • Create educational materials relating to environmental stewardship and climate action
  • Review elements of the Creative Green Tools platform and test their functionality
  • Correspond with program partners to schedule meetings, update them on program activities and get feedback

Ideal experience and qualifications:

  • Knowledge of environmental impacts and carbon footprinting principles
  • Experience using carbon footprinting tools or doing calculations based on emission factors
  • Knowledge of the arts and culture sector
  • Ability to solve problems independently
  • Attention to detail
  • Bilingual in English and French (an asset)
  • Ability to write clearly and summarize complex information into simple text
  • Interpersonal communication skills
  • Time management skills and the ability to work autonomously

Desired start date: Mid-January 2022

Length of contract: 1 year, with possibility of extension

ABOUT THE CSPA

The Centre for the Sustainable Practice in the Arts (CSPA) provides research, training, and consultancy services related to sustainable development, in particular ecological responsibility, in the arts and culture sector. This includes environmental footprinting and support for theatres, museums, galleries, and other cultural organizations and arts presenters/producers. We publish, electronically and in print, associated research in this field and organize conferences and convening on this topic for the purpose of professional and research networking, education, and professional development.

The CSPA views sustainability as the intersection of environmental balance, social equity, economic stability and a strengthened cultural infrastructure. Seeing itself as evolved out of the principles of the 1987 Brundtland Report and 1992 Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, the CSPA aligns itself with the policies of Agenda 21 for Culture as a resource to artists and art organizations.

Rising: Climate in Crisis Residencies at A Studio in the Woods invite artists to face the severity of the climate crisis and be agents of change to guide our collective understanding, response, and vision as we shape our shared future. 

Applications due March 10, 2022. Rising Residencies provide artists with a $3000 stipend, $2000 materials budget, 6 weeks in residence, and staff support to foster critical thinking and creation of new works. Open to artists of all disciplines.

New Orleans and the inhabitants of our region are frequently invoked as some of the most vulnerable to the effects of environmental degradation. While sea levels, temperatures and emotions are rising, our highly manipulated landscape can be seen as a microcosm of the global environment, manifesting both the reckoning and hope which are required in the ways humans interact with shifting urban and natural ecosystems. As the climate crisis permeates the collective understanding of the future, the challenges faced by Southern Louisiana resonate exponentially. We look to artists to ignite our imaginations, illuminate our challenges, and offer new ways to examine the world.

Rising Residencies will provide artists with time, space, scholarship and staff support to foster critical thinking and creation of new works. The call is open to artists of all disciplines who have demonstrated an established dialogue with environmental and culturally related issues and a commitment to seeking and plumbing new depths. We ask artists to describe in detail how the region will affect their work, to propose a public component to their residency and to suggest ways in which they will engage with the local community.

Call for Artists – The Nature of Cities Festival 2022

The arts program, curated by the Forum for Radical Imagination on Environmental Cultures (FRIEC), is calling for artists of all disciplines who seek to radically imagine sustainable cities for the future. This year, artists will have opportunities both to present their work, and also to interact with the global interdisciplinary audience of ecological changemakers through artist-led sessions. All work and sessions will be presented in an imagined virtual world, built by The Nature of Cities for this global conference.

Last year’s festival welcomed 2200 participants from 72 countries, including exhibiting artists from 33 countries. The artists who take part in this festival have the opportunity to play a critical role in this truly global, transdisciplinary meeting of thought and action leaders, and we hope you will join us. ART HAPPENINGS
We welcome Art Happening submissions as video files (including Film, Music, Animation, Poetry, Spoken Word, Theater, Performance, Dance, or any other genre as expressed through video). We are looking specifically for works that will nurture The Nature of Cities Festival programming with unique viewpoints that consider how humans and our cities can be woven together with the rest of nature.

Artworks in this category will be presented to global audiences at The Nature of Cities Festival, during the main plenary talks, as well as within various virtual arts spaces during the conference.

Accepted file formats: A single MPEG or MOV video file, in SD or HD resolution
Length: 3 to 6 minutes
File size: less than 500MB

SHORT DOCUMENTARY
Short documentaries to be exhibited virtually in the Festival lobby or virtual garden space. Documentaries may be on any subject within the broad mission of The Nature of Cities, including but not limited to science, design, equity, planning, community, climate, resilience, food, art, and so on. Both short films and excerpts of longer works are accepted, although excerpts must be able to stand alone as a work on their own.

SESSIONS
Separately from the Art Happenings and Documentary categories, all artists working in any medium are welcome to submit session proposals. Opportunity: Creative Climate Action Project – open call

Embedded Artist to creatively engage with participating farmers to identify climate action solutions.

Artists working in any discipline are invited to apply to become an Embedded Artist with Corca Dhuibhne Inbhuanaithe – A Creative Imagining. Funded by the Creative Climate Action fund, this project will see (an) artist(s) creatively engage with the farming community and the Corca Dhuibhne Creativity & Innovation Hub to support participating farmers to identify climate action solutions that will work for them and wider society.

The Embedded Artist will bring their unique perspective to the project, helping to generate new ways of thinking, fresh perspectives and alternative approaches to the challenges of addressing climate change. Applications are welcome from individual artists as well as groups or collectives. The selected artist(s) will be supported throughout by the Corca Dhuibhne Inbhuanaithe steering group and the Project Manager / Curator.

Corca Dhuibhne Inbhuanaithe – A Creative Imagining is a Creative Climate Action project managed by Corca Dhuibhne Creativity & Innovation Hub, in collaboration with the Green Arts Initiative in Ireland (GAII) and MaREI (The Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine).

Beam Projects Open Call 2022

Each year, Beam seeks proposals for large-scale artworks that will be brought to life collaboratively by the designer, Beam Staff, and youth staff and participants. Our 2022 season features three projects: Beam Project New Hampshire (NH), Beam Project Governors Island (GI), and Beam Project NYC (to be on view in the Bronx).

Beam Center, a Brooklyn-based not-for-profit organization, focuses on self-directed growth through ambitious, collaborative project-making with 7,000+ youth annually. Our programming takes place at multiple locations:
Beam Camp: a month-long residential summer camp in the New Hampshire forest
Beam Camp City: a free day camp on Governors Island
Schools and communities across NYC: youth training and employment programs that result in spectacular public artworks

Beam is looking for proposals from creative individuals and teams, including but not limited to Artists, Designers, Architects, Builders, Engineers, Musicians, Fabricators & Technologists. We encourage the submission of visionary, never-before-realized ideas that culminate in unique, ambitious, and spectacular artworks in a public space. Current Beam Projects include A Universe, to be built at Beam Camp this summer and Constellation, to be built at Beam Camp City this summer. Past Beam Projects have included Beacon (2020-2021), Iceberg (2019), and Time Tomb (2018). More projects can be seen on our website.

The 2022 Beam Project Open Call opens on Thursday, July 1, 2021. Applications must be submitted by 11:59pm EST on Sunday, September 12, 2021.

Winning proposals will be selected by a committee composed of Beam Center staff, youth, past project designers, and community members. Selected artists will receive a stipend of $5,000.

Inviting artists to submit to the VAS annual exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy.

Visual Arts Scotland would like to invite artists from across Scotland, the UK and Internationally to apply to be part of one of the oldest and biggest exhibiting events celebrating contemporary art in Scotland.

Visual Arts Scotland presents our Annual Exhibition 2022, celebrating the best in innovative contemporary visual arts. The exhibition will take place at the Royal Scottish Academy, National Galleries of Scotland, The Mound, Edinburgh in January 2022. This annual show promises to be one of the most diverse exhibitions of contemporary art to be held in Scotland in 2022 with an expected audience of over 30,000 people.

We welcome entries from artists working across a diversity of artforms. Please note that there are five specific open calls pertaining to work type. Please click on the links below to apply:

Calling all Stage Designers: Climate Change Theatre Action EcoDesign Charrette

The Centre for Sustainable Practice in the Arts (CSPA) and Triga Creative (Triga) invites you to our second Eco-Design Charrette taking place between September 19th and December 18th, 2021.  This year we will be hosting our events online, as part of the Climate Change Theatre Action Festival (Climate Change Theatre Action). The Eco-Design Charrette aims to fuel each participant with the knowledge and inspiration needed to design with an ecological consciousness. Through rapid design seeding and idea exchange we will expand how we imagine scenography and its power to change our world. 

This online Eco-Design Charrette is centred on the creation of concepts for each of the fifty Climate Change Theatre Action Plays (Playwrights). Over the span of the Charrette each participating designer will create a seed concept for at least one of the short plays. Our intention is not to ask designers for fully fleshed out designs, but to begin a design concept with ecological thinking at the centre of the creative process. In order to support this work and create a context for the cross pollination of ideas, Triga Creative will host a series of short play readings, design conversations and eco-scenography workshops.

The Eco-Design Charrette period will be an opportunity to develop your eco-scenographic practice alongside other designers and generate concepts for publication and exhibition with an international reach. All designs generated during the Eco-Design Charrette will be published in a two-part volume by the Centre for Sustainable Practices in the Arts (Books). The designs will also be exhibited at World Stage Design in Calgary in 2022 (WSD2022 Exhibition). The charrette will culminate the global participatory CCTA festival with an online closing celebration during which we will share the work created with our international community.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Send Triga Creative a statement of interest in the Eco-Design Charrette to hello@trigacreative.com with the subject line “Charrette Application” before midnight on September 6th, 2021. Please include an overview of your previous design experience, your interest in eco-scenography, and your availability to participate in up to two sessions of programming per week between September 19th and December 18th, 2021.

We will be creating the schedule with consideration of everyone’s availability and with the intention of making our programming as accessible as possible across all time zones. Please be specific about which time zone your availability is relative to. Note that availability for all of the programming is not required for participation.

Transforming how our next generation thinks and acts about the environment and the world requires profound changes in teaching and learning. In PISA, eight out of ten students (78%) reported caring about the environment, and yet less than half of them (38%) felt empowered to participate in activities to protect it. How can we empower students in our classrooms and schools to have a real voice and an active role in this pressing issue for our future?

The OECD, UNESCO and Education International are inviting teachers to:

•   Share initiatives and projects on student empowerment around climate action.

•   Participate in a series of virtual Teacher Forums to collaborate on teaching on climate across borders and cultures.

•   Help us identify, spread and initiate powerful climate insights alongside an international jury.

•   Join the Global Teacher Forum on Climate Action to take part in developing an action plan to implement the leading insights in classrooms, education systems and policies.
