This project, a partnership between Creative Carbon Scotland and the Centre for Sustainable Practice in the Arts, with media partner The List which ran 2010 – 2017, rewarded shows which engaged their audiences with sustainability; take responsibility for their environmental, economic, and social impacts; and think big about how the arts can help to grow a sustainable world. The award will not be offered as of 2018 to allow new initiatives to flourish. We will be offering alternative opportunities to feature shows at this year’s festival which have sustainability at their core. Please stay in touch with either organization and/or check this page for updates as this comes together for the festival in future.
The award for Sustainable Production on the Fringe was first launched in 2010 at the Hollywood Fringe and Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Previous Edinburgh recipients include:
- 2017 – Outland Theatre’s production of Towers of Eden
- 2016 – VOU Fiji Dance’s Are We Stronger Than Winston
- 2015 – Paine’s Plough’s production of Lungs at the Roundabout at Summerhall
- 2014 – The Handlebards for their production of The Comedy of Errors
- 2013 – Daniel Bye’s How to Occupy an Oil Rig produced at Northern Stage
- 2012 – Puppet State Theatre’s The Man Who Planted Trees
- 2011 – Nutshell Productions’ Allotment at the Inverleith Allotments
- 2010 – Team M&M’s The Pantry Shelf at Sweet Grassmarket
Awardees have gone on to future success on the Fringe and presentations around the world including as close as Cardiff for World Stage Design, and as far as New Zealand and all across the US and Canada.
To be considered for the award, a production used our online toolkit to evaluate their sustainable approaches. Questions range from an inventory of materials used to what public transportation lines run close to venues to how themes about sustainability are addressed in their shows.
Also, we do hope this will inspire you to have the discussion with your venue about what they’re doing to make those things you don’t control more sustainable. Encourage your venue to join the Green Arts Initiative details here: http://www.greenartsinitiative.co.uk/

TOWERS OF EDEN Announced as Winner for 2017 Fringe Sustainable Practice Award!
The award winner, Outland Theatre’s production of Towers of Eden, portrays a dystopian future where environmental disaster has struck, traditional agriculture is no longer sufficient to feed the ever-growing population and the government offers a solution which becomes corrupt. They convinced judges with their unique concept and gripping theatrics which accurately conveyed their sustainable messages. Moreover, they were conscious of the sustainability of their production by considering the carbon footprint of their show, including the impact of their marketing, travel options and sustainable engagement through a crowd funding initiative to support their trip to Edinburgh
