Eco Values Art Exhibition at 2012 Eco Design Fair in Shanghai

This post comes to you from Cultura21

The 2012 Shanghai Eco Design Fair will be held on April 14 from 10:00 to 17:00 at the Cool Docks, 515 Zhongshan South Road, Shanghai. An exterior plaza at the Cool Docks will be devoted to giving the public an opportunity to interact with representatives from Shanghai environmental organizations and NGOs and view an art exhibit created through collaboration with members of each organization.

“Learn, Grow, Explore” is an interactive exhibit that employs +/-100 symbols for “eco-values”, painted on on rice paper using Chinese ink by participants of separate workshops organized by ARTSpring and each NGO during February and March, 2012. During the workshops participants create a new ideograph, using ancient Chinese characters as a model, that expresses contemporary values respecting the environment.

The final installation is designed and constructed by Zhao Yunbo, a multi-media artist based in Shanghai. Visitors to the fair may experience the exhibit, interact with the various artists and print the designs of their choice on t-shirts and cloth bags purchased from the participating organizations.

Interactive Futures (IF) in Vancouver: Animal Influence

This post comes to you from Cultura21

Vancouver, BC
17th to 19th of November 2011

From the 17th  until the 19th of  November 2011 you are able to visit the conference „Interactive Futures (IF)“ in Vancouver, BC. The conference includes exhibitions, performances and screenings as well as a workshop with well-known speakers like the ethologist Marc Bekoff and new media artist Lisa Jevbratt. The theme of the conference is „Animal Influence“, as research referring to animal behavior, cognition, creativity and consciousness increased in the recent years and brought forth the idea of animals having emotional and cognitive lives. The focus is put on the research results on animal-human relations and how they effect new media artists in their perception and work with other species, and new ways of dealing with the new knowledge in form of for example experimental art. There will be exhibitions of interactive and new media art works which arose from the artists’ involvement in these themes.
The workshop within the frame of the conference will bring together media artists, scientists and critics as well as philosophers, who can discuss these topics further and bring about new ideas and inspiration.

For a detailed schedule of and registration for the conference,  visit the website: http://www.interactivefutures.ca/

H20 – Preview: Ruth Wallen

This post comes to you from Green Public Art

On May 6, 2011, H20: The Art of Conservation, at the Water Conservation Garden, San Diego, CA, will open to the public. Green Public Art reviewed over 1100 artists portfolios before inviting 14 San Diego artists to participate in the exhibition which offers San Diego homeowners an artistic alternative to incorporate water conservation into their own garden spaces. Green Public Art awarded each artist a mini-grant to develop their site-specific sculptures. In the weeks leading up to the exhibition opening the artist’s concepts will be revealed on this site. Questions? Contact Rebecca Ansert, Curator, Green Public Art at rebecca@greenpublicart.com.

CONCEPT: Dew Harvesters. San Diego receives less than ten inches of rain a year, with almost no precipitation falling between May and October, but yet many native plants stay green throughout the summer.  This project provides sculptures to harvest dew and/or fog, demonstrating the way that local plants survive during the summer months.  Dew harvesting was practiced in antiquity and is again being explored as populations grow, climates change, and water becomes increasingly scarce. Actual dew harvesters would generally be much larger than the proposed sculptures.  While these sculptures are functional, harvesting a small amount of potable water that could be used to water a garden, they are also meant to raise awareness about the local ecology and the need to regard water as a precious resource.

ABOUT: Ruth Wallen is a multi-media artist whose work is dedicated to encouraging dialogue about ecological and social issues. She has created outdoor interactive “nature walks” at Carmel Mountain, the San Bernardino Children’s Forest and Tijuana River Estuary, and has participated in group exhibitions at the Long Beach Museum of Art and the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Colorado. She is a founding member of the multiethnic/national collaborative artist group Las Comadres.  Her work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Light Work, New York. and the Atheneum San Diego. She has published critical essays in journals including LEONARDO, Exposure, High Performance, The Communication Review, and Women’s Studies, as well as two anthologies, With Other Eyes: Race, Gender, and Visual Culture and Blaze: Discourse on Art, Women and Feminism.  She is core faculty in the interdisciplinary arts MFA program at Goddard College, a lecturer at the University of California, San Diego and was a Fulbright lecturer at the Autonomous University of Baja California, Tijuana.  She received her BA from Swarthmore College and her MFA from the University of California, San Diego.

Energetics and Informatics: the 7th ADA Symposium, Whanganui, December 10-12 2010

The 7th ADA Network Symposium examines the relationship between energy and information in media arts. We ask how sustainable is the technology that supports media art? What new forms of practice are developing at the intersection of energy conservation and production, technology, and art? And how can we balance a global arts practice with the ethical complexities of global air travel, and the social complexities of remote participation?

These issues will be explored through keynote presentations, discussions, artist presentations, workshops, a screening programme and two exhibitions.

The symposium features keynote presentations by internationally renowned sound and media arts theorist Douglas Kahn, and Australian artists Joyce Hinterding and David Haines, and a remote conversation with London-based media artist Graham Harwood, creator of the Coal Fired Computer.

A wide range of artists and researchers from Whanganui and around New Zealand will present current projects in art and sustainable energy, in conference sessions including Sustainable Media (Art), Energy Networks, and Social Energy.

Friday December 10 is dedicated to a day long workshop with American artist John Hopkins that will explore Whanganui and its river, via Waka. This is a parallel event organised by The Green Bench, with support from Creative Communities.

An outdoor screening programme on the exterior of the  Sargeant Gallery on Saturday December 11, curated by Sophie Jerram, Julian Priest and Ana Terry, includes films by artists such as Superflex, Hans Uber Morgen, Brit Bunkley, Amelia Hitchcock, Erin Coates, Karen Curley and Don Hunter.

In association with ADA, The Sargeant Gallery presents ‘Ozinal’ 2010 (a radio station from the sun) by Joyce Hinterding and David Haines, courtesy of the Artists and Breenspace, opening December 10 at 5:30.

And the Green Bench Gallery will be showing ‘Burn’, an exhibition of work about Oil, curated by Julian Priest,  Sophie Klerk, and Sophie Jerram. This opens  on December 3 at 5:30, and features works by artists including Superflex, Hans Uber Morgen, Felicity Priest, and the Whanganui Rock and Lapidary Club

The ADA Network Trust invites artists, researchers, curators, art enthusiasts, energy researchers, and all those interested in energy, information, and media art from Whanganui and around New Zealand to participate.

Energetics and Informatics takes place December 10-12, at the War Memorial Conference Centre, Watt St, Whanganui

Cost: registration is $30, this includes  symposium, workshop, outdoor screening, exhibitions and the ‘ADA free lunch.’

For registration and more information see http://symposium10.aotearoadigitalarts.org.nz/regsiter

Energetics and Informatics is supported by Creative New Zealand, Whanganui District Council, Hikurangi Foundation,  Green Bench Ltd, UCOL, Sarjeant Gallery, Whanganui School of Design, Quay School of the Arts, Art Crew Ltd, Ana Terry Design, Whanganui Green Bikes and The Physics Room.

Douglas Kahn’s keynote is part of a distributed series of talks and discussions occurring throughout New Zealand in December 2010. Parts two and three will occur in Christchurch and Auckland respectively. The distributed masterclass is generously supported by Creative New Zealand, The Physics Room and the Gus Fisher Gallery.
