TheÂ Center for the Study of Women in SocietyÂ and theÂ Committee on Interdisciplinary Science StudiesÂ at the Graduate Center are organizing a conference onÂ Feminism, Science & Materialism, taking place at theÂ Graduate Center, City University of New York, from Feburary 14-15, 2013.

The conference will focus on looking with feminist perspectives on the onto-epistemological questions raised by the materialist turn. Keynote speaker will be Karen Barad.

Papers from varying disciplines are invited, addressing a wide range of issues. Some possible examples to focus on might be:

The intellectual and scientific context of the new turn toward materialism

The relation of matter â€” including the biological body â€” to the social.

The relation between new materialism and previous materialisms (such as Marxism and phenomenology) and particularly their feminist elaborations. What are the continuities and discontinuities between feminist materialisms from the 1970s through the current moment?

The insights, knowledge and methodologies offered by the new materialist studies of science. What new frontiers have they opened? What can the new sciences offer for feminist theory?

Cultura21 is a transversal, translocal network, constituted of an international level grounded in several Cultura21 organizations around the world.

We are pleased to announce the Call-for-Papers for the Seventh International Conference on the Arts in Society. The conference and its companion journal provide a scholarly platform for discussions of the arts and art practices, enabling an interdisciplinary conversation on the role of the arts in society. They are intended as a place for critical engagement, examination and experimentation of ideas that connect the arts to their contexts in the world – in studios and classrooms, in galleries and museums, on stage, on the streets and in communities.

In addition to an impressive line-up of international plenary speakers, the conference will also include paper presentations, roundtable discussions, workshop and interactive presentations, poster or exhibit sessions, and colloquia submitted by practitioners, teachers and researchers. Please refer to the Call-for-Papers for proposal submission guidelines and descriptions of sessions. Presenters may also choose to submit written papers for publication in the fully refereed International Journal of the Arts in Society. If you are unable to attend the conference in person, virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication in this fully refereed academic journal.

The host city of Liverpool celebrated its 800th birthday in 2007 and, throughout its history, has stood at the center of many of the world’s trades, inventions, and cultural innovations. As a world port city, Liverpool boasts a diverse population, drawing from its many peoples, cultures, and religions, and in celebration of this history, Liverpool was named a European Capital of Culture in 2008.

As an important cultural center, Liverpool is known for its contributions to music, visual arts, literature, and performing arts. The city houses more galleries and national museums than any other city in the UK outside of London, including the Tate Liverpool, the FACT Centre, the Walker Art Gallery, the Bluecoat, and of course, the international Liverpool Biennial art festival. In addition, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Liverpool Shakespeare Festival, Matthew Street Festival, and the Empire, Everyman, Liverpool Playhouse, Neptune, Royal Court and Unity theaters are all found in this colorful city.

Conference Framework

Convened at the initiative of UNESCO, in close partnership with the Government of Republic of Korea, the 2nd World Conference on Arts Education will take place in Seoul from 25th to 28th of May, 2010. The Conference will bring together representatives of Ministries of Education and/or Culture from the UNESCO Member States, as well as various experts, researchers and practitioners in the area of Arts Education.

Researchers are invited to submit abstracts for paper presentations within the framework of the upcoming World Conference on Arts Education. Abstracts from any relevant discipline will be considered, provided they make an original academic contribution to the research of arts education and its effects. All workshop topics are listed in the Appendix 1 and also available on the following webpage:Â http://www.artsedu2010.kr/htm/en/program/201_detail.jsp. The Steering Committee will endeavor to schedule abstracts according to authorsâ€™ preferences but reserves the right to decide on the final form of presentation. We particularly seek proposals for research papers on the following topics within the realm of Arts Education:

Arts education practices after the Road Map: contextualizing the Road Map
Encouraging cooperation and partnerships: within and beyond school
Developing the capacity of arts education practitioners: education and training system
Reaching out to a diversity of socio-cultural contexts and specificities
