Launch of The Theatres Trust People’s Choice Award 2012

The Theatres Trust is pleased to announced at the ABTT Theatre Show 2012 that entries are open for The Theatres Trust’s third annual People’s Choice Award.

Entertainment industry manufacturers and suppliers are invited to enter one of their products for the People’s Choice Award. Products need to be making a difference to theatres sustainability, either through design, manufacture or operation.

Selection takes place at PLASA 2012 running from 09 – 12 September at Earls Court, London, where shortlisted products are displayed on The Theatres Trust’s stand and visitors to the show cast their vote for the People’s Choice Award.

Visitors to stands at both the ABTT Theatre Show 2012 and PLASA 2012 can also find information on the Trust’s European Regional Development Fund-backed ‘Ecovenue’sustainability project, which has been improving the sustainability of 48 London performing arts venues.

At PLASA 2012, after three days of visitor voting, the award will be presented to the winner on The Theatres Trust’s stand at a reception at 1700 on Tuesday 11 September. The presentation of the Award will mark the culmination of PLASA’s sustainability series of related Education Programme events that day.

In 2011 those shortlisted included Core Lighting, ETC, Martin Professional, Philips, ROBE and Robert Juliat. Last year PLASA visitors voted Global Design Solutions’ArcSystem the overall winner.  Matt Lloyd, of Global Design Solutions, which also took the 2010 prize, said “The People’s Choice Award is so important as it’s voted for by people in the industry – the people who actually use the equipment. It’s great for public relations, and a morale booster for the company.”

PLASA Chief Executive Officer & Director of Events, Matthew Griffiths, said “The Theatres Trust People’s Choice Award provides a chance for people in the industry to support the commitment shown by manufacturers to issues of sustainability in theatre and live entertainment. An award that is voted for by the theatre community carries real value to the companies dedicated to making a sustainable difference.”

Tim Atkinson, leading on delivery of the Ecovenue project, said “It was a closely fought competition last year. The enthusiasm of the visitors that voted demonstrated that improved product sustainability is high in the mind of users, buyers and manufacturers. I look forward to a competition just as close this year, with entries from a range of companies spanning the entertainment industry.”

Manufacturers or suppliers who wish to enter may pick up an entry form from The Theatres Trust stand at the ABTT Theatre Show 2012, or visit www.theatrestrust.org.uk

The Theatres Trust Ecovenue project at PLASA 2010

Theatres Trust will be profiling the Ecovenue project, and all its participants at PLASA 2010 in The Theatres Trust’s very own ‘Ecovenue’ on Stand 2-M28 at Earl’s Court, showcasing the environmental efficiency practices being implemented across the London venues involved with the project. In addition to profiling the venues, the Ecovenue area in Earls Court 2 will also feature technologies designed to rationalise the environmental footprint of theatres.

As part of this initiative, The Theatres Trust will launch its first ‘People’s Choice’ award for sustainable theatrical products to complement the existing PLASA Innovation Award for Environmentally-focused products.

All exhibiting manufacturers at PLASA 2010 are invited, as part of an open call for entries, to put forward products to be considered for this Theatres Trust award. The Theatres Trust will then select those that represent either a significant step forward in the resource efficiency of an existing product or a new product intended to contribute to the resource efficiency of a theatre to be featured in the area.

Visitors to PLASA 2010 will be able to vote on the product they feel best represents progression towards sustainability, while also learning about the advice that the Ecovenue participants are receiving and the experiences of the 24 already signed up to the project.

The PLASA Show runs from the 12th – 15th September. For a Theatres Trust ‘People’s Choice’ award application form, please email Tim Atkinson.

ECOVENUE: London’s Green Theatre Plan, One Year Later

Reprinted from PRNewswire: “Theatres Trust Announces ECOVENUE Green Theatre Project for London” September 9, 2009

On 14 September 2009 at Plasa 09 The Theatres Trust will announce a new three year programme to provide specialist theatre environmental advice and undertake free DEC assessments with 48 small scale theatres in London.

One year on from the launch of the Mayor of London’s ‘Green Theatre: Taking Action on Climate Change‘ initiative at Plasa 08, The Theatres Trust will announce it is to receive GBP450,000 over the next three years from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in London to deliver the ECOVENUE advisory programme.

Mhora Samuel, Director of The Theatres Trust said “When the Mayor of London’s Green Theatre Plan was launched last year to help theatres in London achieve reductions in carbon emissions by 60% by 2025, commercial and subsidised theatres in London were quick to sign up. We recognised that smaller theatres with less resources would find it harder to participate, and so made an application for funding to the LDA at the beginning of 2009 to help address the gap. I’m delighted that we can announce the ERDF award at Plasa 09 and help more London theatres to address environmental issues associated with climate change and reduce their energy use.”

The ECOVENUE project provides each participating theatre with a free theatre-specific Environmental Audit, and free Display Energy Certificates in 2010 and 2011. A DEC is a publicly displayed certificate that informs the public about the energy use of a building. This free environmental improvement advice will be delivered by a new Theatre Building Services Adviser to be employed by the Trust.

The Trust will be inviting 48 theatres to apply to participate in the project, which will run until spring 2012. Application details will be advertised over the following months.
